What NFL rivalry is biggest?
New York Giants vs. Philadelphia Eagles – The rivalry between the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants dates back to 1933. However, the competition began to heat up when both teams came to relative prominence in the 1940s and 1950s. The rivalry is mainly based on the two teams being in the same division in the NFL since 1933 and the geographic New York City– Philadelphia rivalry.
It is ranked by Sports Illustrated as amongst the top ten NFL rivalries of all-time at #4. However, the geographic rivalry between the Eagles and Giants is well known in football circles, meriting mention on ESPN.com. The rivalry is the second-oldest of the NFC East, It has been called the greatest rivalry in NFL history.
The Giants and Eagles have met four times in the playoffs, with each team winning twice. The Giants won in 1981 & 2000, and the Eagles won in 2006 & 2008, The Eagles currently lead the all-time series 89–87–2 as of the 2021 season.

How many WVU players have won a Superbowl?
Page 10 – CREDIT: DALLASNEWS.COM 1: Chuck Howley, Super Bowls V and VI If you ever are stuck in random Super Bowl trivia, you would be apt to remember that Chuck Howley is the first player to win a Super Bowl MVP. He is also the only Super Bowl MVP for the losing team.
- Howley won the Super Bowl V MVP for his performance in the “Blunder Bowl” against the Baltimore Colts.
- Yes, back before the Mayflower trucks came rolling in, the Cowboys faced the Colts in Super Bowl V.
- The game would go down as one of the ugliest championship games ever played, with the two teams combining for 10 turnovers.
Howley was directly responsible for three turnovers, picking off two Earl Morrall passes and recovering a fumble. Even with his three turnovers, it was not enough for the Cowboys to overcome the Colts. Baltimore came away with a 16-13 win in the “Blunder Bowl.” Dallas would make it back to the championship the next season.
- The Cowboys and Howley would get to redeem themselves against the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl VI.
- The Cowboys dominated the Dolphins in a 24-3 route, highlighted by Howley’s 41 yard interception return.
- After winning MVP of SB V, he finally got his Super Bowl ring in SB VI.
- The West Virginia Mountaineers have a rich tradition of producing star NFL players.
Out of this talented group of Mountaineers alumni, WVU has been represented in the Super Bowl 19 times by 13 different players with 8 Super Bowl rings and one Super Bowl MVP. Not every West Virginia alumni that has made it to the Super Bowl has been a star in the big game, but here is how the top 10 performers shakes down.
CREDIT: SI.COM 10: Mike Fox, Mike Logan, John Thornton, and Walter Easley The quartet of Fox, Logan, Thronton, and Easley each helped their respective teams qualify for the Super Bowl, but none started in the championship game. Walter Easley, as a rookie, helped the San Francisco 49ers reach Super Bowl XVI at the end of the 1981 season.
Easley would ultimately not play in the Super Bowl (unconfirmed whether it was due to injury or otherwise). While Easley did not play in SB XVI, he was a contributor to the success of the 49ers in 1981 and earned a Super Bowl ring with the 49ers 26-21 win over the Cincinnati Bengals.
Mike Fox was part of the New York Giants squad that made it to, and won, Super Bowl XXV against the Buffalo Bills. Fox was a back-up defensive tackle that played sparingly in Super Bowl XXV. Box scores did not officially record tackles for the Super Bowl until the mid-1990s, making it impossible to determine whether Fox registered a tackle in SB XXV.
As it stands in the record books, Mike Fox finished SB XXV without recording a single stat. Still, Fox received a Super Bowl ring as part of the Giants team that beat the Bills 20-19. John Thornton was a rookie for the Tennessee Titans team that made their only Super Bowl appearance in franchise history in 1999.
As a rookie, Thornton started 3 games for the Titans throughout the season, registering 4.5 sacks and a safety. He played in each of Tennessee’s playoff games, seeing duty on special teams and in special defensive packages. Thornton did see limited action in Super Bowl XXXIV, a game that will go down for one of the wildest ending in Super Bowl history.
Thornton and the Titans came up half a yard short of victory, falling to the St. Louis Rams 23-16. Mike Logan came to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2001 season to serve primarily as a back-up safety for the team. In the 2005 season, Logan would play in the nickel situation and on special teams, racking up 24 tackles.
- Logan saw action in every Steelers playoff game leading up to Super Bowl XL in Detroit.
- The Steelers 21-10 victory over the Seattle Seahawks will forever be remembered as Jerome Bettis’ last ride, one that Mike Logan was proud to contribute to, even if he did not register a single tackle in the game.
CREDIT: SPOKEO and US PRESSWIRE 9: Alvoid Mays, Super Bowl XXVI The former Mountaineers defensive back is probably best known for his hit single “Mountaineer Rap” with Major Harris. The other big hit of his career came in Super Bowl XXVI. Mays recorded his lone career sack against Jim Kelly of the Buffalo Bills.
- Mays and the Redskins built a big 24-0 lead on the Bills before weathering a Buffalo comeback.
- Washington held on for a 37-24 victory, winning the franchise’s third Super Bowl and sending the Buffalo Bills to their second consecutive Super Bowl loss.
- 8: Pat McAfee, Super Bowl XLIV
Nov 18, 2012; Foxboro, Massachusetts, USA; Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee (1) during the second quarter against the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Greg M. Cooper-USA TODAY Sports The first Mountaineers alumni to start in the Super Bowl in our countdown is Pat McAfee.
- The rookie, 7th round draft pick, was a starter from day one for the Indianapoils Colts.
- McAfee averaged 44.3 yards per punt during the 2009 season, giving Peyton Manning and the Colts offense optimal field position on the way to a 14-2 record and a match-up with the New Orleans Saints in Super Bowl XLIV.
In SB XLIV, McAfee booted a pair of punts for 46 and 44 yards. He would not see much action in the game as both the Colts and Saints went up and down the field in an offensive track meet. The Saints would take down the Colts in a thrilling 31-17 game featuring an onside kick recovery and pick six by the Saints.
- Porter lined up opposite a pair of hall of fame (cannot believe Tim Brown got passed over again) wide receivers, Tim Brown and Jerry Rice.
- Porter turned in a solid 2002 campaign, rolling up 688 yards and 9 touchdowns for the Oakland Raiders.
- Porter and the Raiders made it to Super Bowl XXXVII opposite of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and previous head coach John Gruden.
Jerry Porter caught 4 passes for 62 yards and a touchdown in a losing effort. As a matter of fact, the Raiders got rolled up in SB XXXVII. Tampa Bay forced 5 turnovers and held the Raiders to 19 yards on the ground. Oakland ended up losing to the Bucs by a 48-21 margin.
CREDIT: ESPN.COM 6: Todd Sauerbrun, Super Bowl XXXVIII Yet another West Virginia alumni as a starting punter in the biggest game in football. The grissled veteran, Sauerbrun came to the Carolina Panthers at the height of their NFC run. In 2003, the Panthers broke out to reach the Super Bowl at the end of the 2003 campaign.
Sauerbrun’s boot was needed to give Jake Delhomme and the hot/cold Panthers offense a fighting chance. The 2003 Carolina Panthers came to be known as the “Cardiac Cats,” winning 8 games by less than a touchdown.
- Sauerbrun booted 7 punts for a total of 310 yards in SB XXXVIII versus the New England Patriots juggernaut of the early 2000s.
- The Cardiac Cats finished their 2003 season with yet another heart pounding finish, losing to the Patriots on a last second field goal, 32-29.
- 5: Mike Compton, Super Bowls XXXVI and XXXVIII
CREDIT: BOSTON GLOBE Big Mike Compton was part of the New England Patriots dynasty of the early 2000s. Compton played both center and guard for the Patriots from 2001-2003, protecting Tom Brady and opening holes for a carousel of running backs. Compton anchored the Patriots offensive line in the 2001 season.
- That was the year the Patriots overcame the odds to topple the “Greatest Show on Turf.” With rookie quarterback Tom Brady at the helm and a fortunate tuck ruling, the Patriots advanced to SB XXXVI.
- Bill Belichick schemed up a perfect defense to thwart the Rams high powered offense, jamming the wide receivers.
Compton and the offense racked up 267 yards of offense en route to a 20-17 victory over the St. Louis Rams. Compton was also a member of the 2003 SB XXXVIII winning team. Unfortunately, Compton was injured early in the season, put on injured reserve after the third game of the season.
Still, when the Patriots edged the Panthers in SB XXXVIII, Compton won his second Super Bowl ring. CREDIT: SPOKEO and US PRESSWIRE 4: Fulton Walker, Super Bowls XVII and XIX Fulton Walker is one of the most recognized kick returners in Super Bowl history. Walker made his mark on Super Bowl history in SB XVII, returning a kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown against the Washington Redskins.
His kickoff return gave the Miami Dolphins a 17-10 lead heading into halftime. His 98 yard return is still a Super Bowl record. The Dolphins would not hold their halftime lead, falling to the Washington Redskins 27-17. Walker ended the game with 4 kickoff returns for 190 yards and a touchdown.
- Fulton Walker and the Miami Dolphins would return to the Super Bowl two years later in SB XIX, facing the San Francisco 49ers at the end of 1984.
- The former Mountaineers star returned 4 punts for 90 yards and two kicks for 15 yards against the 49ers.
- SB XIX would go down as the duel between Marino and Montana.
As we are all well aware of, Montana and the 49ers owned the 1980s, shutting down the Dolphins 38-16.
- Fulton Walker ended his career, 0-2 in the Super Bowl.
- 3: Jeff Hostetler, Super Bowls XXI and XXV
- The lone Mountaineers quarterback to start and win a Super Bowl is none other than Jeff Hostetler.
CREDIT: ESPN.COM At the beginning of his career, Hostetler served as the Giants back-up quarterback to Phil Simms when they defeated the Denver Broncos in SB XXI. New York took down Denver 39-20. Hostetler got a great view of the action from the bench, waiting for his opportunity.
Hostetler would get his shot in the 1990 season when Simms went down with a broken foot with only three games left in the regular season. Ironically, Simms injury came in a regular season game against the Buffalo Bills, the same team Hostetler would lead the Giants to victory against at the end of the season.
Hostetler completed 20 of 32 passes for 222 yards and 1 touchown. It was not the easiest of games for Hostetler as the Bills defense got after him, taking him to the ground time after time. Hostetler would even be sacked in this game.
- Bill Parcels knew just how to balance his play calling to keep the Bills offense off of the field, feeding Otis Anderson the ball to control the clock for more than 40 minutes.
- Hostetler’s victory would be sealed by Scott Norwood’s missed field goal, preserving a 20-19 win.
- 2: Darryl Talley, Super Bowls XXV, XXVI, XVII, and XVIII
- No other West Virginia Mountaineer has appeared in the Super Bowl more often than Buffalo Bills defensive stalwart Darryl Talley.
- Talley teamed with Bruce Smith and Cornelius Bennett to anchor the Bills defense in the 1990s.
The Buffalo Bills first appeared in Super Bowl XXV, facing the New York Giants. As we recapped earlier, the Bills were about a foot right of winning the world championship after the 1990 season. Had the Bills won SB XXV, perhaps they could have become the team of the 1990s instead of the Dallas Cowboys. Instead, the Bills would progress through the next three Super Bowls by wider margins.
- Talley would end his stellar NFL career without a Super Bowl ring, but would finish with four AFC championships and a pair of pro bowl selections.
- 1: Chuck Howley, Super Bowls V and VI
- If you ever are stuck in random Super Bowl trivia, you would be apt to remember that Chuck Howley is the first player to win a Super Bowl MVP.
CREDIT: DALLASNEWS.COM He is also the only Super Bowl MVP for the losing team. Howley won the Super Bowl V MVP for his performance in the “Blunder Bowl” against the Baltimore Colts. Yes, back before the Mayflower trucks came rolling in, the Cowboys faced the Colts in Super Bowl V. The game would go down as one of the ugliest championship games ever played, with the two teams combining for 10 turnovers. The Cowboys and Howley would get to redeem themselves against the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl VI. The Cowboys dominated the Dolphins in a 24-3 route, highlighted by Howley’s 41 yard interception return. After winning MVP of SB V, he finally got his Super Bowl ring in SB VI. > : WVU Players in Super Bowl History: Top 10 Performers
