What is Ocean City Maryland known for?

Ocean City has a wonderful and storied past. An Englishman named Thomas Fenwick,the namesake of the Delaware resort that borders Ocean City to the north, once owned the land that our Ocean City of today rests upon. All who are involved in the city’s tourism today can look to Isaac Coffin as grandfather of that industry.

Visitors came from all over the eastern seaboard to enjoy the pristine beach, abundant fishing and to collect seashells in what at the time was an undeveloped strip of sand, not the Ocean City, Maryland that we know today with its high-rise condominiums, amusements, shops, restaurants and mini golf courses.

During this early period, the appeal of Ocean City as a resort was largely in its natural beauty, and many came just to watch the waves breaking on the shore, view the sunset over the bay or feel the winds of the sea rustling the dune grass. The first beachfront inn was made available to visiting guests in 1869. • A railroad from Berlin was developed in 1878 that allowed travelers to cross the Sinepuxent Bay directly to the resort and the town was incorporated in 1880.

I know the route Chesapeake – C&D – Del Bay – Atlantic – OC Inlet. Has anyone made this trip before? Offer any suggestions? Where to stay along the way, what to look out for? Any help woul be great.

We will making the the trip in a center console. Thanks fellas Joined Aug 29, 2002 · 791 Posts It is an easy trip. In the C&D Canal, you will want to be mindful of the ship and tug traffic. They can tie up a good deal of the real estate as they pass through. Keep an ear on channel 13. Ships and tugs report in with a traffic controler as they enter/leave the canal.

This will let you know whats coming your way. There is a fuel stop just east of Chesapeake City on the north side of the canal. I forget the name of the marina, but it is fairly obvious when running west to east. The marine is in a little cut off the canal on the north shore.

On this trip it can save you some time and fuel if you play the tides right. Delaware bay can get a bit sporty, particularly with the wind against the tides. As always watch your weather. In Delaware bay you will run into a few areas with masses of boats anchored around the light houses. No worries, just be aware.

Joined Apr 2, 2005 · 2,609 Posts it’s going to hard to fully avoid a bad tide run in db. you’ll have to play it out as time gets closer. the marina is summit north marina. below new symrna river there’s another channel that forms onlong the western shore which shaves a few miles off the run.

• You should be fine but for deeper drafts and being unfamiliar with it ( my situation) picking a crossing point to get from the main channel to the westen channel was a little too nerve racking as the shoal is pretty shallow getting from one to the other.

last we made the run in a 41 viking and got slowed to about an 11-12 knot chug heading south as the winds and tides beat each other and us up. it’s a fun run with some cool sights. I’d reccomend watching out for the other boaters in the canal and of course the ship traffic.

• We ran to oc on a tuesday(?) which was very quite.ran home on sunday(?) which in db was no big deal but the cnd anfd cb to the south river was in heavy traffic.
• Btw.2nd chesapeake inn.good food better drinks !! i’ve got the whole run on the noaa electronic chart system.it’s good for planning if interested.

also.the northern ches. bay bouys versus the charts (2 elec 2 paper) conflicted so just track your progress. have fun!! Its fun to go to Jelly Fish Joels & Hart Miller, but lets face it, theres more to boating than sitting around tieing one on every weekend, We want to see the sights by water- its different than just driving a car and seeing them. Anyone interested in maing the run with us? We have a place in OC to stay on 121st street.

We are not sure what size we will be running as we just sold our 21 this past fall to upgrade. We are in the process of shopping prices. Give it another 2 months and we will be back. Also Delaware City Marina has fuel and Craby Dicks is just up at the point, better food than Summit North thats if there`s still a resturant up at the top of the hill which is a hassle to walk unless you get one of the cart boys to run you up. Other than that get a designated driver and go for it :beergood:,, oh yeah stop by the Chesapeake Inn I just about live there during the summer.

As many already said, the Db can be nasty to say the least. We left last year from the middle river on a Wed. morning calm seas all the way to Oc. Avg 50-55mph witha few short burst of 90+ 3.5hours down.

4. From Baltimore it took me about 7 hours at under 25 knots.
5. I pulled my jetski the way there the entire trip.
6. Including a day of fishing offshore i used about 600 gallons round trip.

We left after work on a Friday and spent the night in Chesapeake City on the hook, The next morning we ran to Lewes for gas(CHEAP GAS!!!!), then on to OC. The way back we did in a day. Weather is a key, we were lucky and had good weather both ways. Got to play with some Dolphins on the way thru Dbay and that was cool.

Joined Jul 18, 2005 · 312 Posts Joined Jul 9, 2001 · 3,861 Posts From my previous post. As long as you are prepared, have the right sized boat and monitor the weather, the trip is pretty easy. I have completed the trip in 4.5 hrs before (to Indian River Inlet) but that was under pretty good conditions.

(avg.26-28 kts) I usually allow 5-6 hours from Podickory Point. It is exactly 124 nm from Pod Pt. to Indian River Inlet. Add another 30-35 mins to the OC inlet. I am actually going to IR again this year on July 12th for a week. The C&D is a breeze – just be cautious of the larger ships. It was $3.25 to 3.50 everywhere else. But since they are now the only gas on the C&D they screw you good. The Delaware Bay is well marked and a lot like the Chesapeake Bay. Make sure you stay near or in the channel because it can get shallow real quick.

Both bodies of water become real nasty under the right wind conditions. Try to plan your trip with the tide flow and that will cut down on some of the chop. Make sure you have a decent GPS because a compass acts wacky in certain parts of the Del Bay due to the NJ Nuclear Power Plant. Just plot your course before you go and stick to it.

A good idea would be to get an EPIRB. If you don’t want to buy one, you can rent them from BoatUS for $50.00 per week. That’s pretty cheap for some peace of mind. Also check with your insurance company. They may need to issue an endorsement for your trip.

That Ches Inn is rockin, must be the only place for miles. It always made the 6a shove off fun. Very easy trip, run the ebb through the canal and DB but it might not matter to u if you’re in a rocket. U don’t have to worry about running the marked channel as it isn’t the fastest course.
