Frequently Asked Questions From The Roamans

The Roamans Blog

W
e've been debating putting an FAQ up on our website, just for the heck of being super cool and informative, but we don't want our buttons up there getting crowded. So, instead of junking up the header, we're going to get down to FAQ business right here.

That's right. We have a list of questions that we're asked constantly about RV living, that we want to provide answers to for your consumption. If after this FAQ breakdown you have some more questions, shoot them our way! We'd love to keep the conversation going.

And without further adieu...

The Roamans FAQ

  1. Have you ever gotten pulled over?
Luckily, we've never gotten pulled over. The beauty of driving such a heavy piece of machinery is that you really can't speed the way you'd be able to in a car. We also like to cruise, and not spend an arm-and-a-leg on gas, so we keep it under the speed limit usually.

1) Do you tow anything?
Not yet, but we have been mulling over some options. A Smart Car would be PERFECT behind Maude, because we really don't need anything huge. But we may just go with a scooter, or a couple of bikes in order to keep things simple. But we're definitely always open to suggestions.

2) How do you make money on the road?
We get asked this question constantly. And in truth, there are a variety of ways we make money on the road. First, we're usually looking for odd-jobs in every area we visit. It's a great way to make extra cash and get out and explore a new area. On top of that, we freelance.  For example, I'm a writer for OnlyInYourState.com and I write articles every day. We also have a few other gigs here and there that help fund our travels. Working remotely is a beautiful thing and we're extremely lucky.

3) What have you learned about the other while being on the road?
I'm not sure that we really have learned much more than we already knew. Vanessa and I moved in together rather quickly, and lived in a studio together to start. It was one of those things where we just wanted to be together and we enjoyed each other that much. So living full-time in an RV together wasn't all that different.

4) How do you pass time driving for long stretches?
Driving long stretches can be a bit therapeutic for us. We normally just jabber jabber with each other and take in the new sights. We like to listen to podcasts and play trivia games. Or there is always the ever-popular Road Trip Bingo, which I am constantly pestering Vanessa to play with me.

5) Where do guests sleep?
We haven't had too many guests in Maude, but when we do, we put them up in the very posh, converted dinette. It's actually quite comfy, and provides ample room for an average-height human. Although you may have to cuddle with a cat or two during your stay.

6) How are the animals adjusting?
The animals are having a blast. Spike loves putting on his backpack and hiking. Penny likes all the new sights and smells. The cats lazily observe everything from a window vantage point, or soak up some sun on the front dash of the cab, (Vanessa is in talks to get the cats a leash and harness to stay tuned). Honestly, the animals love being on the road. There is always something new for them to check out, just like for us.

7) How long do you plan on being full-timers?
This question we also get often and the answer is—it's open-ended. We really enjoy being on the road, and as difficult as it may become, there is a certain freedom that we have experienced that would be hard to get rid of. Maybe eventually we'll want to settle down again, but even then it may just be where we hop around seasonally.

8) Any state in particular you'd like to see?
Maybe not a state, but we're both itching to go to Canada. It seems like such a beautiful, open, sprawling place that'll just lead to a thousand more adventures. Once we conquer the U.S., consider that our next stop.

9) Is it expensive to live full-time in an RV?
No, it really isn't. People always think that traveling is expensive, which it can be if you're traveling expensively. We always tell everyone just how inexpensive RV travel can be, especially when compared to standing still and paying rent or a mortgage, car payments, credit cards, electricity, insurance, gas, etc. We broke things down a few months back and detailed exactly what the cost of living on the road full-time meant: The Monthly Cost of Full-Time RV Living: January Expenses

10) Where do you park that thing?
Anywhere we can! We're lucky to have a small RV, which doesn't take up much room. In fact, Maude can fit into most regular parking spaces, so that's a plus. Keeping your RV small means you can blend in more naturally, whether in a park, in Walmart, or just on the side of the road.

Hopefully this quick FAQ answered some of your questions. And if not, feel free to shoot an email our way!

Where To Next?! We Want To Hear From You!

The Roamans Blog
I have to say, we're very pleased that we decided to add the Contact Us Button on our website. Since inception, we've received an influx of messages from fellow travelers or hopeful travelers, providing advice about where we should travel or the best places to visit in the country. Let me just say for the record... WE LOVE HEARING FROM YOU. With the exception of the one gentleman who sent a flurry of emails around 2 in the morning criticizing a few of our vegan posts, which did include cheese options, to which I had to politely remind him that only Vanessa is vegan, and I'm a vegetarian. Cheese options are still very much in my agenda, and if he had bothered to read our About Us, or our previous blogs, he would know that. That shut him up real quick, only after he criticized eating plant protein meat replacements. It's nice to know that he cared about our diets.... hahahaha, annyyywayssss.

We really do love hearing from everyone. Especially with your suggestions on where to travel, and advice for the road. That's why we decided to make an official call to action. This upcoming year is going to be another big one for The Roamans. Now that we have almost a year under our belt, we've started to get the hang of this full-time RV travel thing. That's why our itinerary is pretty much open this next year. As we mentioned already, we're staying in the Midwest this summer for a few reasons:

1) It gets really crowded on the road during the summer, and campgrounds are packed. Gas prices are inflated and National Parks are overflowing with people.
2) We wanted to spend some time catching up with family and friends.
3) Maude needs some mods.
4) We wanted to recharge our batteries.

So once Autumn rolls around, we'll be back on the road. Which is why, we want to hear from you. One of the most frequent questions we're asked is "Where to Next?" And while sometimes we know exactly what the next destination is, oftentimes we don't. This upcoming year is a blank canvas for us. We've been tossing around the ideas of Tennessee and Asheville, NC for a month or so, but nothing has been set in stone yet. We also received a lovely email from a fellow in Canada who has completely sold us on his town—we just need to get our passports in order.

So, if you have some suggestions, throw them our way. We like nature, the off-beat, and unique. Hidden gems are a plus. Plus, we really do love when locals can give us their insider tips.

We look forward to hearing from you all!
