5 Reasons We Joined Planet Fitness as Full-Time RVers

In today's world of boondocking and full-time RV living, many people push the concept of being as disconnected as possible. Off the grid, if you will. The further you are off-grid, the better. Which is a nice idea for many, but not all. As much as Vanessa and I like to disconnect and be off grid for chunks of time, we also like to retain certain conventional amenities.

Like a gym membership.

This was a tough decision for us, because we've paired down a majority of our expenses and "necessities" to just a few. But, what sold us in the end, surprisingly enough, was the fact that these memberships are pretty useful to a full-time traveler. Here are the top 5 reasons we chose Planet Fitness as Full-Time RVers.
Planet fitness full-time RV travel

1. The Showers

With over 1,000 locations across the country, that means that Planet Fitness will always have clean, hot showers for us to use. Even if we don't go in there to pump some iron, we can still get a hot shower that lasts longer than 3 minutes. With a 34-gallon water tank in our RV, this doesn't afford us very long showers, especially when we're also brushing teeth, washing faces, and cleaning dishes. So to have showers at your disposal anywhere we go, that is a HUGE plus.

2. The Haircuts

At a majority of the Planet Fitness locations, they have an on-site hair stylist. So what this means, is that we can get free haircuts whenever we want. Just a dusting? No problem. Need some layers? They gotchu. This added incentive in the membership meant eliminating an extra cost for the both of us in terms of haircare.

3. The Gym

We get a lot of our exercise outdoors. As often as we can be hiking, running, walking with the dogs, we're outside. However, there are a lot of days where either the weather or the location doesn't permit. So, we can stay active and healthy inside. It's important on the road, to keep your immunities up and your body strong. The actual gym affords us that.

4. The Free WIFI

We write freelance from the road. We update the blog. We stay in touch. And we need wifi to do all of those things. Most Planet Fitness locations have a little cafe, where you can sit and use the wifi. It's perfect for us. We can get some work done inside, then have a workout. It's a win-win.

5. The Price

For a dollar to join, plus $19.99 a month you get use of everything across the country (Black Card Membership). Plus you can bring a guest with you. Think about what you spend $19.99 a month on already. Maybe something silly. Maybe a one-time meal, or drinks at the bar. $19.99 at Planet Fitness gets us everything mentioned above PLUS use of their spa (we do frequent the Hydromassage beds often to rest our weary muscles), pizza on the first Monday of the month, or bagels the second Tuesday of the month. For the traveler, having a few meals covered is a big added bonus.
Now, there are some drawbacks to Planet Fitness as a whole. For example, we can't wrap our heads around the fact that tanning booths are still a thing. Also, there aren't any group classes, and we do love to get our group workout on. It also seems that this is a newbie gym for most. They have a "No Judgment" policy, which I support fully. In fact, that should be used outside the gym as well. But, I've seen many, MANY people working out incorrectly inside the facility, and that could be quite dangerous. As a gym that caters to more newcomers, they should definitely have trainers roaming around helping people correct what they're doing.
So, that's that. We wanted to share with you a bit about why a gym membership at Planet Fitness might be a great thing if you're on the road constantly. Do you have a gym membership on the road? We'd love to hear your feedback.

Just to let you know, I know this article is a little dated... but planet fitness now offers group classes! Like a ton all included... plus new total body enhancer machines and massage chairs! Great article thanks!

Never seen one that had a salon despite claims that they offer free haircuts

It sounds like you are saying that for $20/month, BOTH of you get to use the massage chairs, etc, but I think only the person whose membership it is can use those. So for both of you, it would be $40/month.

We haven't found a PF with a salon, but that would be great!

I love the "no judgment zone" model, but you're right, most of the people there are beginners (like myself), and there isn't really a lot of instruction on the machines. You have to make an appointment to see a trainer and they will develop a routine for you to follow, but my trainer didn't even see me on any of the machines, so I'm not sure how she assessed what I was capable of, so that was a bit disappointing. I mainly use the treadmill and plug in my headphones to catch up on tv to distract me from the walking. If they had a pool, too, this would be tops. But for $10-$20/month, it's still a great deal.

Can not search planet fitness locations by amenities on the website, through PF customer service, nor by asking a local location if they know of any or any way of locating a location by 'say haircuts'. So, I haven't been able to locate a single location that provides haircuts. I have looked at locations in 5 states so far.
